Just across the border near Reuver and Swalmen is the small town of Brüggen. In this typical German town, you will find many pleasant terraces. There is a historic castle with a water mill dating from 1289 in the Heart of the town.

Kruisheren Monastery and Bracht Mill

The focal point of Brüggen is the Kruisherenklooster (monastery of the Knights of the Cross) founded in 1479 with the catholic parish church of St. Nicholas. The Brachter Mill museum with its beautifully designed exterior, the Bracht Evangelical Church from 1699, the Gothic Church of St. Peter in Born (1136) and the Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Assumption in Bracht (1484) are definitely worth seeing.

Events

In addition to Brüggen Castle, events also take place in the town centre and on various squares during the summer months. The Burgfest, the Altstadsfest and the Brachter "Dohlenfest" with lots of music are definitely worth a visit. In the town centre, there are several restaurants serving international and German cuisine, so there is something for everyone.

Nature

Of particular note is the former British ammunition depot, which was one of the largest in Western Europe until 1996. After the departure of the British, a heath landscape developed in the area. Today, it is one of the most important nature reserves in North Rhine-Westphalia. In this area you will also find the Borner See. This is a lake that was created by peat extraction in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, it is a protected area with many bird species. 

Brüggen is surrounded by the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. The Swalm River (Schwalm in German) meanders through the area. A 120-kilometre network of bicycle and hiking trails offers an opportunity to explore this part of the German landscape.
