The route takes you past 7 windmills in Weert and Nederweert. This municipality still has 8 mills of which 3 are working. Most of the mills are corn mills but in Nederweert there is also a combined corn/oil mill operating. The windmills are located within the Kempen~Broek Border Park for the Weerterland.
The history of the mills
The mills are often very old. Their history goes back to the 18th or 19th century. Some mills have predecessors whose history even goes back to the 16th century. In the past, these windmills in Weert were important for the development of the city into a prosperous community. Weert even had its own cloth mills in Haarlem and Antwerp.
