Grote Heggerplas

Recreational water

At the Grote Heggerplas there is a day beach and dive site. This dive site can be reached on foot from the car park. The special feature of this lake is that it contains one of the oldest freshwater wrecks in Northern Europe. This is an old gravel barge and is called the Prussian wreck.

In the months of April and May, the Grote Heggerplas has the best water visibility. This is also the mating season of the zander. You can approach and photograph these zander up close. The day beach is sandy and the water is fresh. Dogs are allowed in the water at the Grote Heggerplas. There is an information board, waste bins, toilets, a drift line and a sunbathing area.

The Maasgouw municipality has made the beach "de Grote Hegge" suitable for swimming. But: never swim alone and stay within the drift lines! To the right of the diving spot lies the Maaskernen tourist boarding point, where you can board a boat for a trip to Thorn, Wessem and Maasbracht. There is also a landing stage and a footbridge and there are three parking spaces.
