Guided Tour of Montfort Castle

Guided tour in the remains of Montfort Castle, for centuries one of the largest castles in the Netherlands!

Castle Montfort in central Limburg was built around 1260 AD as a fortress of Hendrik van Gelre. After phases of alterations, sieges, fires and also destruction by the inhabitants of Montfort, the castle slowly fell into ruin.
In recent years, two corner towers and several large cellars have been restored. One of the towers, the ´jachtslot´ (literally: the hunting lodge), harbours a visitor centre about the interesting history of this castle, its inhabitants and the surrounding landscape.
The VVV tour guide explains the fascinating past of this region. You descend into the atmospheric 14th century eastern cellars and into the dungeon in the White Tower. The castle towers offer a magnificant view over the castle garden and the surrounding area.
