Visitor Centre

Montfort Castle dates from 1260 and was for centuries one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. It was built by Hendrik van Gelre, on a ridge in the watery Vlootbeek valley.

The fascinating past of Montfort Castle

Because of the location on a ridge, polygonal ground plan and thick stone walls the castle was practically impregnable. After Henry's death in 1285, Montfort Castle belonged to the county of Gelre.

Let yourself be surprised at and around Montfort Castle by the fascinating past and the beautiful landscape of the "Heerlickheit Montfort". Creep in the dungeon. Enjoy the view from the Panorama Room. Stroll through the castle garden. Also discover the beautiful estates Rozendaal, Schrevenhof and Reigersbroek.

Walking and cycling

A visit to Montfort Castle can be perfectly combined with an interesting walking or cycling tour through the Heerlickheit Montfort. For this purpose four walking tours and four cycling tours have been developed, each with its own theme and full of interesting facts about the area around Montfort. The walking routes vary in length from 4 to 6 kilometers, the cycling routes from 30 to 46 kilometers. After returning, a visit to the castle terrace is a nice ending.
