At each Liberation Route audio spot, you can listen to a radio play about the impressive experiences of one or more people during the last years of the war. In Kessel, you listen to the story of the heavy fighting between the Allies advancing from the Peel region and German occupation forces.
A day never to be forgotten
In September 1944, heavy fighting took place in central and northern Limburg between the Allies advancing from the Peel region and German occupation troops. Kessel becomes the scene of death and destruction in the month of November. The ferry capsized, resulting in civilian casualties. On 17 November 1944, German soldiers blew up the tower of the parish church and set fire to De Keverberg castle.
