Monument Maria-Gelofte
In September 1944, the Allies wanted to conquer a bridgehead over the major rivers in the Netherlands with Operation Market Garden. Everything went fairly well with the Americans, but the British paratroopers were surprised by German armored troops and had to retreat with heavy losses in the Betuwe. During the period from October 1944 to March 1945, approximately 90,000 North Limburgers were evacuated, but Tegelen, Steyl, and Belfeld were spared.
The residents of Tegelen were in dire straits because overcrowded Tegelen was in the front line, and there had been a major problem with the food supply for weeks. Nevertheless, the municipality was spared from further war disasters and did not need to be evacuated. Tegelen, Steyl, and Belfeld were completely destroyed, but the population was unharmed.
