Places of interest

The Sint Petrus Banden Church, also known as the Great Church, is a striking building located in the centre of Venray. This church characterises Venray and has already endured a lot.

In 1401 the construction of the St. Petrus Banden church started and at that time it was nicknamed the 'cathedral of the Peel' due to its dimensions. In 1837 the church was restored and 30 years later again. During the war, the tower was destroyed, but the collection of statues remained. In 1962, the new tower was completed and the church was fully restored.

The sculpture collection, dating from the 17th century, is unique and attracts many visitors. This collection consists of ten almost life-sized apostle statues that adorn the pillars of the nave. Yet it is not a closed series of statues; nine of the ten statues belong together. These nine statues are carved from oak, while the statue of the apostle Philippis is carved from lime wood. The apostle figures are seen as the bearers of the Catholic faith, like the pillars bear the church building.
