Places of interest

Sint-Petrus Banden Church in Venray, also known as the Great Church, is a church from the 15th century. The striking building is located in the centre of Venray.

Construction of the Sint-Petrus Banden Church began in 1401 and at this time its dimensions earned it the nickname 'Cathedral of the Peel'. The church was restored in 1837 and again 30 years later. During the war, the tower was destroyed, but the collection of statues remained. In 1962, the new tower was completed and the church fully restored.

Sculpture collection of the Sint-Petrus Banden church

The church owns no less than 90 statues. The oldest statues are from the 15th and 16th centuries. This sculpture collection is very unique of its kind. With this statue treasure, the Sint-Petrus Banden church can call itself one of the richest churches in the Netherlands. The church in Venray was a crucial strategic vantage point. First owned by the Germans and often shelled by Allied planes. Then blown up by the Germans just before their escape. The church tower is still accessible today. In the period 2019-2020, the St Peter Banden church in Venray was largely restored. Work took place in and around the tower, nave and choir. Meanwhile, the restoration has succeeded and you can visit the church.
