Walk Boshuizerbergen: where shiftomg sands meets sharp needles

Walk 3.9 Km. Take a walk through the Boshuizerbergen and discover the largest juniper thicket in southern Netherlands, with drifting sands, woods and wetlands.

Walking through the Boshuizerbergen – a landscape full of contrasts

Just outside Venray you’ll find a unique natural treasure: the Boshuizerbergen. This drifting sand area is part of the European Natura 2000 network and enjoys the highest level of protection. Its crown jewel? An impressive juniper thicket – with over 4,000 shrubs, the largest in southern Netherlands!

A juniper thicket is made up of slow-growing, spiky shrubs with twisted shapes. They are rare because they only thrive in very specific conditions. Their appearance gives the landscape a wild, almost fairytale-like atmosphere.

Surrounding this core area is a 200-hectare belt of coniferous forest. Forest management is gradually introducing more variety with deciduous trees. Your walk will take you through peaceful pine woods, patches of open sand, and further north into wetter terrain. There you’ll find Op den Buus: wet grasslands and swamp forests, home to birds, insects and other wildlife.

The walk is around 4 km long and offers a varied experience of nature, tranquillity and local history – all in one route.

Perfect for nature lovers and walkers looking for something special.
