Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum
Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum
Freely accessible, contiguous and watery. These are the characteristics of Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum; the new nature reserve to be realised between Ooijen and Wanssum by the end of 2020. Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum is an area unlike any other nature reserve. At 540 hectares, it is the largest continuous area of Meuse nature in North Limburg. The Meuse is central to this area and the influence of water is visible everywhere.
An area full of water
Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum is a large nature reserve in northern Limburg. It is different from other nature reserves because it was built to protect against the high water levels of the river Meuse. There are many different types of landscapes in the park. There are forests and lowlands where water comes out of the ground. As a result, there are many different plants and animals in the park. When the water is very high, the flood gullies fill up first. But if the water continues to rise, the area fills up. This is quite a spectacular sight!
Groote Molenbeek
The Groote Molenbeek is an old Meuse arm of about 32 kilometres long and flows through the Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum. Groote Molenbeek originates in Grashoek and meanders through the landscape to Wanssum, where it flows into the Meuse. This brook is ideal for canoeing or supping.
