Exhibition Maria Lives!
Exhibition Maria Lives!
from 20 Jan 2026
to 31 Dec 2026
From 20 January 2026, you can visit the exhibition Maria Leeft! at Museum Thorn. In the basement, you discover stories, images and symbols connected to Mary. The exhibition is for everyone: for people with faith, but also for anyone who is simply curious. You view the presentation through a digital tour in Dutch, German or English. The exhibition remains open for one year.
Images, rituals and stories
In the first room, you learn more about who Mary is. You see how she is shown as mother, virgin and mediator. You also see how her story resembles that of other mother goddesses from ancient times. After that, you discover how people show their faith and feelings. Think of lighting candles, praying the rosary or going on a pilgrimage. Sometimes it is also about very personal rituals.
In the third room, artworks take centre stage. From old paintings to modern sculptures: you see how artists have given their own view of Mary through the centuries. The final room looks at the present day. What does her image mean today? Themes such as womanhood, care, grief and hope are shown in a recognisable way.
A woman who continues to inspire
“With this exhibition, we want to show that Mary is more than a religious symbol,” says Museum Thorn. “For many people, she is a source of comfort, strength and recognition. That still makes her important today.”
The exhibition was created in collaboration with Museum W, Limburgs Museum, Museum van de Vrouw, the abbey church and residents of Thorn. Main sponsor Holbox provided the sustainable interior. Through VVV Thorn / Hart van Limburg, you can also buy a tangible keepsake.
