Limburg is full of art and culture

Limburg has a rich and a fascinating history. Traces have been found of people who had settled here in the region well into prehistoric times. As time passed, the region flourished and (religious) buildings sprung up like mushrooms. Many of these can still be admired today and testify to the region's wealth of art and culture.

Limburg traditions

Besides the many sights, Limburg also has a varied palette of traditions. Many of Limburg's traditions are known far beyond the provincial borders. One of the best-known is carnival, but the Oud Limburgs Schuttersfeest Old Limburgian Archers' Festival), local processions, village feasts and Limburg festivals are also activities where you can get a taste of Limburg culture.

Intangible cultural heritage

In Hart van Limburg, the past lives on in traditions, crafts and customs. Think of the impressive markmen's fair traditions, with marksmen marching in colourful uniforms during parades and practising the age-old king's shooting, the baking of Limburg flan and the exuberant carnival. The Limburg dialect and the Dragon Fest in Beesel, a spectacular theatre play performed once every seven years, have also been recognised as intangible cultural heritage. This living heritage connects people and keeps old customs alive.
