Experience spring in Hart van Limburg

As soon as I wake up in the morning to the birds singing outside my window instead of my alarm clock, I know spring is on its way. I love spring. When I was little, my mother, my sister and I used to visit a farmer nearby to see the newborn lambs. If we were lucky, we were even allowed to feed the lambs a little milk from a bottle.

Birds singing in the morning, lambs skipping through the grass and crocuses slowly appearing from the ground – for me, that is what spring really feels like. It is also the time to go outside again, experience new things and get moving again.

In Hart van Limburg, spring feels even a little closer in many places.

New life on the farm

One of the nicest things about this time of year is that you see signs of new life everywhere. Across the region farmers open their farms to visitors during this period. During the lamb days you can see up close how new life on the farm begins.

Newborn lambs that are still a little wobbly on their legs, playing together in the straw or curiously walking towards you. These are the kinds of moments that instantly bring a smile to your face.

As a child this was often one of the highlights of spring. But honestly, it is just as enjoyable now.

Cycling past farm shops

Spring is also the perfect time to get back on your bike. In Hart van Limburg many cycling routes run past fields, meadows and small villages. Especially during this time it is wonderful to choose a route and simply see where it takes you.

Along the way you often come across a small roadside stand or a farm shop selling regional products. Freshly laid eggs, local honey or strawberries when the season begins. It feels different when you know it almost literally comes from the land right next to you. Stopping for a moment, looking around and taking something tasty with you simply becomes part of the journey.

Walking with a donkey

Spring can also be experienced here in a special way: during a donkey walk. Together with a donkey you set off along quiet paths, past meadows, forest edges and small country roads.

Donkeys walk at their own pace and that automatically makes you slow down as well. You look around more, hear the birds singing and notice how the landscape slowly comes back to life after winter.

Along the way there is plenty of time to stop for a moment, let the donkeys graze or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. It is a relaxed way to explore the surroundings.

Asparagus

When you say spring in Hart van Limburg, you naturally also say asparagus. As soon as the season begins they appear everywhere: on restaurant menus, in farm shops and at roadside stalls.

Limburg asparagus is traditionally served with ham, boiled egg and a butter sauce. Simple, but incredibly delicious.

At some asparagus farms you can even take a look at the fields. During a guided tour you learn how asparagus is grown and harvested and why this product is so closely connected to spring in Limburg.

A taste of spring

Spring in Hart van Limburg is not about one single activity. It lives in the small moments: a bike ride through the landscape, a stop at a farm shop, a walk along quiet paths or a visit to a barn full of young animals.

Sometimes you only need to step outside to truly experience spring.
