Until WWII, Baexem parish church stood in this spot. The church was built between 1200 and 1300 and was characterised by a typical Romanesque style. The relatively small church building was constructed with thick walls. Inside the church, the numerous sturdy columns added to the massive impression.
The base of the tower was built using marlstone on the outside and cobblestone within. This made the tower stand out white against the main church building which was built in brick. The upper part of the tower was renovated many times over the centuries. Towards the end of WWII, in 1944, the church was heavily damaged by the violence of war. After the war, the church was not rebuilt. Instead, a new church was erected elsewhere in the village.
After the liberation, the monumental church bell from 1450 was recovered from the ruins of the tower. This bell now serves as a small bell in the bell tower of Baexem’s present-day parish church.
