The Oldest Town in Limburg
Wessem is situated on the river Meuse in Limburg. As early as 1118, it held special rights related to milling, fishing, the right to have a port, to charge toll and to mint coinage. These rights were comparable to city rights, making Wessem the oldest town in both Belgian and Dutch Limburg .
Due to its favourable location on the River Meuse, Wessem became an important trading centre in the Middle Ages. The market square, with its originally medieval design, still reflects this history.
