Part of the Hiking Trail Europe
The Hiking Trail Limburg is part of the Hiking Trail Europe, a long-distance hike from London to Berlin. In Limburg, the route connects historic locations in the Ardennes, the Hürtgenwald and Nijmegen. Along the way, special listening spots and monuments point out important events from the war.
Vectors of Memory: Remembrance in the landscape
Along the walking route, markers designed by architect Daniel Libeskind have been placed. These ‘Vectors of Memory’ mark places where far-reaching events took place. The vectors can be incorporated in the pavement or on walls and make history tangible for walkers.
Impressive locations along the route
The Hiking Trail Limburg passes several memorial sites:
- Roermond - The tower of the cathedral was blown up!
In February 1945, during the liberation of Roermond, the German occupiers blew up the tower of the cathedral. The city was virtually deserted at the time due to the forced evacuation of residents. - Overloon War Cemetery
280 British soldiers and one Dutchman are buried in this military cemetery in Overloon. Six of them have never been identified.
Additional walking routes and detours
Along the main route there are several shorter walks, such as the short round trip Hiking Trail Nederweert. You can also put together your own route via the junction system and discover the most beautiful trails in Limburg.
