The International Meuse Cycle Route follows the Meuse through France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Along the way, you cycle past towns, villages along the Meuse and ever-changing landscapes. The route is also known as EuroVelo 19 and is suitable for both experienced and less experienced cyclists.

Cycling along the Meuse

The route follows the river from its source to its mouth and takes you through three countries. As part of the European cycle route network, this route is known as EuroVelo 19. The landscape changes constantly along the way. You cycle along quiet riverbanks, through villages and towns, and pass places where culture, history and local flavours come together.

Cycling the entire route makes for a long journey. Of course, you can also choose to follow just part of the Meuse Cycle Route and explore the landscape along the river at your own pace.

The Meuse Cycle Route through the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the route follows the Meuse for approximately 480 kilometres. From the hills around Maastricht, you cycle towards Central Limburg. Between Maastricht and Maasbracht, the Meuse flows over shallow gravel banks. Shipping on this stretch uses the parallel Julianakanaal.

Around Roermond, the route takes you through the Maasplassen area. The many lakes were created by gravel extraction and are often directly connected to the Meuse. The flat landscape makes this section pleasant for cycling. Along the way, you pass historical sights, various places to stop for something to eat and the city of Roermond.

Further north, the landscape changes again. The route continues through Noord-Limburg and Noord-Brabant before eventually reaching Zuid-Holland, with river dykes and urban areas along the way.

Art and variety along the Limburg route

Along the Limburg section of the Meuse Cycle Route, you will also come across ten blow-up artworks. These artworks also provide unusual places to sit and take a break along the route.

The International Meuse Cycle Route lets you see the Meuse from a different perspective time and again. Get on your bike for a short section or turn it into a multi-day trip and follow the river through different landscapes, villages and towns.
