Hiking along the border
The Premium Hiking Trail Schwalmbruch follows the winding path of the Schwalm. On the German side, the river is canalised; on the Dutch side, it still flows freely through the landscape. The forests differ as well: commercial woodland contrasts with nearly untouched wild forest. You walk past wet meadows and ponds, through juniper heath and on to the open waters of the Elmpter Bruch.
Views and special moments
Climb the viewing tower in the juniper heath for a stunning view over the moorland. In August and September, heathland sheep graze among the flowering heather. Walk at dusk and you might hear the nightjar or the croaking of rare frogs. The song of the reed warbler is often heard in spring and summer.
Animals, plants and rare species
Along the way, you may spot kingfishers, hobby falcons and even ospreys. Grass snakes, dragonflies, deer and foxes also live here. In this watery landscape, rare plants grow such as sundew, bog asphodel and several types of iris. Every season has its own surprises.
Practical information
