Witch Walk
Witch Walk Roermond takes you back to 1613 and 1614, when the city witnessed the largest witch trials in the Netherlands. At least seventy women and a few men were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. Some were midwives, whose profession alone made them suspicious. A single accusation could mean death. The Malleus Maleficarum (Witches’ Hammer), written by Dominican monks, described how alleged witches should be recognised and interrogated.
This walk takes you past several locations that recall this dark chapter, including the infamous Rattentoren (Rat Tower), where interrogations took place during the trials.
