Walking/hiking routes

Length: 5.3 km

Start in Nunhem

Walking along the Haelensebeek, from the bench 'Sjoean Nunem' you can clearly see the division between the higher sandy grounds and the area where the Meuse emptied out. Carré farm Strikkenhof (right) lies against the high sandy soils, on the left you can see the Maas clay excavations for brickworks. You cross the Napoleonsweg and enter Buggenum, a village with many historical buildings such as the Maria chapel. This brick chapel with three-sided apse and angled buttresses was built in traditionalist style with neo-Gothic elements.

Start in Buggenum

St Aldegundis Church, which was built on a mound because of frequent floods, has an interesting cemetery. Eye-catching features include the 17th-century tombstones embedded in the cemetery wall. And the graves of Gustave Beltjens, the author of the Belgian constitution and Mr De Babberich, the first secretary-general of the European Union. You return to Nunhem via 'Stefans paedje', the former castle lane and the old post lane. The post lane used to be the connecting road from Roermond via Horn and Haelen to Neer. In Nunhem, also enjoy the beautiful Saint Joseph Chapel and the historic church of Saint Servatius.
