Haelen is a village that consists of a core with approximately 4370 inhabitants. The surroundings of the village have been inhabited since the Stone Age. This has been established on the basis of archaeological finds. The reason for this early settlement is that Haelen is located near the high(er) sandy soils along the Leudal.

Aldenghoor Castle
During this diversions you will become acquainted with the starting location Kasteel Aldenghoor. Aldenghoor Castle is situated on a moat. The castle comprises a main building, which consists of two wings with gable roofs at right angles to each other. At the inner corner, the castle has a heavy, round tower of brick and marl with a high spire (from around 1700).

The medieval castle had four towers, of which only the present tower remains. The three other towers were destroyed during a siege by a gang of robbers at the beginning of the 17th century during the Eighty Years' War. However, the castle still has square towers on three corners of the main wing.
