Nature Reserve Leudal

The municipality of Leudal is named after the nature reserve Leudal, which forms the heart of the municipality. Due to the green character of this municipality, it is sometimes called the Garden of Limburg. Nature reserve Leudal is located between the villages of Haelen, Roggel, Neer, Nunhem and Heythuysen and covers some 900 hectares. 500 ha of it is managed as a reserve by the Forestry Commission. In addition to the stream valleys, which formed the nature reserve, the area is also home to beautiful sights such as the Sint Ursula windmill. Due to the special character of the Leudal, the nature reserve has Natura 2000 status, ensuring the area's biodiversity.

The stream valleys of the Leudal

The stream valleys in the Leudal are of scenic beauty. Zelsterbeek and Leubeek meander between the trees of the nature reserve. Over centuries, the water has carved the stream valleys so deeply that ravines have formed. At the transition from higher to lower grounds, run-off rainwater has carved out hollow paths. The stream valleys make the Leudal a landscape with unique flora and fauna. It consists largely of forest with hazel, birch and willow, and in the walls of the banks lives the kingfisher who catches fish in the streams.
