In Search of the Dragon in Beesel
You won't have to search long to find the dragon in Beesel. Take a walk through the village and you'll soon spot it. On building facades, in gardens, on street signs and sometimes in small details that only catch your eye the second time around.
It's no coincidence that Beesel is known as Limburg's dragon village. The legend of Saint George and the Dragon has been part of the village for centuries. And now there's a new way to discover the story: by following a walking and cycling route that takes you past a number of special locations throughout the municipality of Beesel.

The legend of Saint George and the Dragon
For centuries, the story of Saint George and the Dragon has played an important role in Beesel. According to the legend, Saint George, a brave knight, confronts a dragon that threatens the village. The dragon represents evil, while Saint George fights to save both the village and the princess.
In Beesel, this story is still told today and brought to life during the Draaksteken. This open air theatre spectacle has been performed since 1736 and has grown into a large scale production involving hundreds of local residents. Once every seven years, the village transforms into a giant open air theatre where music, singing and spectacular scenes bring the legend of Saint George and the Dragon to life.
Start at the castle
I started my walk at Kasteel Nieuwenbroeck, a place closely connected to the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. You don't have to begin here, but it certainly feels like the perfect starting point.
From here, simply follow the route and you'll soon come across the first locations. As you walk through Beesel, you'll notice that the dragon's story appears throughout the village.

From bench to bench
The route is marked by a series of benches spread across the area. Next to each bench you'll find a post with a QR code. Scan the code to open the Erfgoed Route app, where you can listen to and explore the story connected to that particular location.
Each stop reveals another chapter of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. As you walk or cycle through Beesel, you'll gradually uncover the story piece by piece. Along the way, you'll also discover places linked to the village's history and heritage.
You can follow the entire route from start to finish, but the nice thing is that it's just as easy to visit individual stops while enjoying another walk through the village.

The dragon is never far away
What struck me most during the walk was how differently I started looking at the village. Once you immerse yourself in the story of Saint George and the Dragon, you suddenly begin spotting dragons everywhere in Beesel.
Perhaps that's exactly what makes this route so enjoyable. It's more than a walk from one location to the next. It's a journey through the story behind the village itself.
And even after you've finished the route, you'll notice that the dragon never really disappears. It's hidden in sculptures, small details and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.
