Summer at its berry best: Blueberry season is back!

It's July and the summer holidays have finally arrived. The days are long, the sun is shining and blueberry bushes across Hart van Limburg are bursting with fruit. Blueberry season has officially begun and it's one you won't want to miss.

From July through September, Limburg's plantations transform into fields of blue. At Op Homme in Posterholt and Plantage Blankwater in Boukoul, you can experience it for yourself. Each location has its own unique character, making it the perfect place for a memorable blueberry adventure.

The magic of picking your own blueberries

In a world where we're always looking for what's next, faster or better, there's something special about slowing down. Picking your own blueberries is mindfulness in its purest form, no app or meditation subscription can compete with it.

At Op Homme in Posterholt, they've embraced this philosophy for decades. Since the 1980s, when blueberries were still a rarity in the Netherlands, they've built a tradition centred around quality and tranquillity. Here, it's all about respecting the season, taking your time and enjoying nature at its very best.

Plantage Blankwater shares that same passion for quality and hospitality. Thanks to carefully selected bushes and years of expertise, every visitor heads home with the finest blueberries of the season, surrounded by the warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes this plantation so special.

But why go to the effort of picking your own? Why not simply buy a punnet at the supermarket? The answer is the experience itself. Picking blueberries is wonderfully relaxing. You stroll between the bushes, feel the warm sunshine on your back and choose exactly which berries to pick. Will you go for the small, slightly tangy berries or the large, sweet ones?

Why blueberries are so healthy

Blueberries are packed with nutrients. They're rich in antioxidants, which help protect your body against harmful substances. They also contain vitamins C and K, as well as fibre that supports healthy digestion.

Research suggests that blueberries may help improve memory and concentration. They're also good for your heart and can contribute to lowering blood pressure. All that goodness is packed into one tiny berry.

Freshly picked blueberries are even healthier than the ones you buy in the shop. They're fresher, retain more of their nutrients and, best of all, you know exactly where they came from.

Practical tips: Make the most of your visit

Blueberry season usually runs from mid-July until the end of August, depending on the weather. At both Plantage Blankwater and Op Homme, you can pick your own blueberries. Buckets are provided on site, but don't forget to bring sunscreen and a cap, as the Limburg sun can be surprisingly strong during the picking season.

Take your time and allow around one and a half to two hours for picking. It's not about collecting as many berries as possible as quickly as you can; it's about slowing down and enjoying the moment. Most visitors pick at least two kilograms per person. That may sound like a lot at first, but blueberries freeze exceptionally well, allowing you to enjoy your harvest for months to come.

Pick, pause and enjoy

After you've finished picking, both Plantage Blankwater and Op Homme invite you to stay a little longer. Order something to eat or drink and relax while enjoying the fruits of your own harvest. Want to make a full day of it? Combine your visit with a walk or a cycling route through the surrounding countryside. Both locations are situated on or close to beautiful routes through Hart van Limburg.

That way, a visit to a blueberry plantation becomes about much more than picking fruit. Take a seat, enjoy something tasty and simply savour the moment. And if you still feel like exploring afterwards, you'll find yourself back in nature in no time.
