5 Handy hiking tips

Hikers have taken the hiking tips to heart and walk through the beautiful countryside

Are you about to go hiking in beautiful Limburg? Then we have five handy hiking tips for you. Because there is nothing more important than being well prepared. Read on and find out which tip you can use.

1. Choose the appropriate hiking shoes

Low or mid-height hiking shoe? Based on where and how long you will be hiking, you can choose the right walking shoes. Going for a short walk on flat ground? Then a low walking shoe is fine. Are you going for a more strenuous hike? Then it is best to choose a mid-height hiking shoe.

2. Hiking equipment checklist

When you go out for a brisk walk, make sure you have the right hiking equipment with you. Here are some items that should not be missing:

  • Mobile phone;
  • Good hiking shoes;
  • Water;
  • Food;
  • Comfortable clothing;
  • Rainwear and/or a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen;
  • Band-aids;
  • Backpack;
  • Hiking maps.

3. This backpack you take with you

If you are heading out for a multi-day hike, take a backpack between 30 and 50 litres. Smaller is not better in this case. The smaller the back panel, the more you carry the backpack on your shoulders instead of on your hips.

Going out for a short hike? Then a daypack is fine. This backpack will fit all the items you need for a short hike.

4. Beware of ticks and pests

While hiking, you can be bitten by a tick. The best thing, of course, is to avoid this. This can be done by wearing skin-covering clothes and closed shoes. Still, a tick bite cannot always be prevented. After hiking, always check your body. Do not forget the 'warm spots' such as the backs of knees and armpits.

5. How to prevent blisters

The best walking tip to prevent blisters? As crazy as it sounds: walk even more. Blisters are often caused by walking distances you are not used to.

In addition, there are of course a number of other things you can do to prevent blisters. Wear suitable shoes and socks, preventively cover sensitive areas with blister plasters or apply Vaseline to your feet and sprinkle a bit of talcum or foot powder in your shoes.
