From Relative Calm to Terror
Until September 1944, life in Roermond remained relatively calm, with the city largely unaffected by major acts of war. This changed dramatically on 9 September 1944. By that time, the city had been administratively incorporated into Germany. At the end of November, Major Matthaeas assumed command of the city, ushering in a period of unprecedented terror.
Roermond as a Frontline City
By the autumn of 1944, Allied forces had advanced to within a few kilometres of Roermond. The German forces, determined to halt the Allies' progress towards the Ruhr area – the heart of Germany’s military industry – mounted fierce resistance. As a result, Roermond became a frontline city.
