The Red Brook
The Rode Beek is a beautiful meandering stream that originates just across the border with Germany. Vlodrop-Station takes its name from the former station Vlodrop located on the railroad line the "Iron Rhine" that used to connect Belgium with the Ruhr area.
Happiness spots
Along the way you also pass two happiness spots. Residents of the municipality of Roerdalen have designated twenty-six spots where you can make your happiness a little bigger.
Happiness spot 16:
'The Bat path of Saint Ludwig'. The romantic boardwalk across the marsh of Rode Beek. Crisp water and a red soil full of iron. The brook forms the natural border between the Netherlands and Germany. Here also grows a special plant, Gale. This used to be used instead of hops for brewing beer. This gale beer is again available in Roerdalen.
Happiness spot 17:
'The Wheel of Fortune', is also children's lucky spot K6, 'The Butterflies of the Wheel'. The Gitstapper mill has a very large wheel. The water and Lady Fortuna make the wheel of fortune turn all day long. This water mill was built in the fourteenth century along the Rode Beek and is well worth a visit.
Wassenberg
Also in Wassenberg, the locals have designated 10 spots where you can make your luck a little bigger. Enjoy the view of Wassenberg on the viewing platform of the Bergfried, experience the paradisiacal vacation feeling in the district of Ophoven, experience the tranquility in the Rose Garden, spend a few hours together on the cozy Roßtor square or visit the small chapel "Birgelener Pützchen"...
