Many castles originated in the Middle Ages from a simple tower. This tower has been enlarged to the final castle. The oldest known owner is Dederic Wilde van Mersen, sheriff of Roermond (1404-1414). He is listed as the owner in 1417. His grandson had no heir. His daughter married in 1454 with Johan van Hertevelt, ans as a result the tower came into the possession of the family Hertenvelt
