The Boshoverheide
The Boshoverheide near Weert is a special area full of stories. Many people today enjoy its beautiful nature while hiking. Young soldiers train there, mountain bikers brave the loose sandy paths of the Budelerbergen, and pairs of woodlarks provide a new generation.
Rich past
Hidden beneath the drifting sand and among the Scots pines are the remnants of a rich past. Virtually invisible and elusive, but tellable. One of the intriguing stories is that of the prehistoric urn field. About 3,000 years ago, farmers threw up mounds over the cremated remains of their loved ones. Over four to five centuries, the burial field grew into a burial mound with - by some estimates - more than 3,000 dead. The mounds remained visible for centuries, until the nineteenth century and even until today.
So the Boshoverheide is not only a place for recreation, but also a place where history and nature go hand in hand. Discover it for yourself and get carried away by the stories this unique area has to offer.
