Mills in Limburg
The Netherlands is known worldwide for its windmills. Mills have been an indispensable part of the landscape for centuries. So too in Limburg. These impressive structures, powered by wind or water, not only had an important economic function, but also became a symbol of Dutch culture and history. Limburg is home to several stream and river valleys. Hence, many water mills can be found here. In the Weert region, on the other hand, you will find many windmills. A number of mills in Limburg are still in use and can also be visited.
Windmills
Windmills tower high above the Limburg landscape and can be seen from afar. These mills with their characteristic sails use the power of the wind to perform various tasks such as grinding grain into flour. The Weerterland, with its open plains, provided excellent conditions for the construction of windmills. That is why so many can be found here. Although most of the windmills in Weerterland are now no longer in use, you can still visit some on certain mill days.
Water mills
Besides windmills, there are also numerous watermills in Limburg. These mills used the power of flowing water to grind corn, saw wood or make paper, for example. Many mills have been restored and are open to the public, allowing visitors to enjoy these special pieces of heritage. A special mill community is Wegberg just across the border in Germany. No fewer than 14 water mills can be found here! Definitely worth a visit.
