In 1855, Frans Nicolas founded the company F. Nicolas in the Sint Jansstraat, which specialized in fusing to stained-glass windows. The company became the largest glass studio in the Netherlands with churches as its main customers.
Frans imported materials from European countries where religious stained-glass painting was flourishing. And they had experience with medieval procedures. Frans Sr’s sons continued the company and grandson Joep Nicolas established a name for himself in the world of Dutch monumental glass art. His daughter Sylvia and grandson Diego continued the tradition to make up five generations of stained-glass artists. Up until 1939, the glass studio remained a family business. Nowadays, the building that once was Studio Nicolas is home to a glass gallery.
