Ellerschans

The Ellerschans was restored next to the old site. So that the soil could be saved for future archaeologists.

The Ellerschans used to be a place of refuge for farmers with their cattle. When there was a threat of war, they fled to this 'boerenschans'. During the Eighty Years' War, many 'boerenschans' were erected on the Limburg plains. This is a simple defensive work, usually an earthen wall with a moat, to keep plundering gangs of soldiers away.
