Hattert Castle

Almost nothing remains of Castle Hattert. Near it, an unprecedented tank battle took place between late September and mid-October 1944. First, an American armoured division takes on the Germans. The weather conditions are harsh. Rain turns the battlefield into a huge mud puddle in which tanks have difficulty manoeuvring. The Americans suffer heavy losses. They are relieved by a British armoured and infantry division. During the battle, the castle is completely destroyed.
