In Maasbree a department of the National Organisation for Assistance to Divers was therefore established.
In total, about 250 people in hiding were housed in the 400 houses that were in Maasbree at the time. This meant that practically the entire village was involved in the resistance, if only by keeping quiet about what they knew.
The Maasbree hiders' monument was erected by former hiders, to thank them for the help and protection they received from the inhabitants of the village. The monument was unveiled on 21 November 1970 by Captain H. Schouten, who was a hider in Maasbree at the time and editor of the illegal magazine Moed en Vertrouwen.
