Monument 'de Wachters'
The Wachters in Venlo serve as symbolic guardians of the city and warn against aggression, violence, and war. During World War II, Venlo was on the front line. The Allies fought their way slowly to the Maas, while the occupiers became increasingly stubborn and fanatical. The bridge over the Maas between Venlo and Blerick was repeatedly bombed because of its strategic importance. In the autumn of 1944, the city of Venlo was heavily hit by bombings and fires. Plundering and food shortages broke out, causing Venlo to fall into a state of distress and anarchy. Eventually, the city was liberated in December 1944 and the inhabitants were evacuated to the north of the Netherlands. The Maas bridge was completely destroyed but rebuilt in 1957.
