Places of interest

With a height of 79.8 metres, the St. Nicolaas church in Meijel is one of the higher church towers in the Netherlands. The church stands in the old village centre, on the same location where the earlier Meijel churches were also situated.

The church is a neo-Gothic, three-aisled hall church (a church with several naves, of which the side aisles are approximately as high and sometimes as wide as the central aisle) and is built in soapstone layers. In addition, the church has a high tower and four bays, with a six-sided conical spire.

During the Second World War, on 25 September 1944, the former church was blown up by the Germans. In 1955, the current St. Nicolaas church was put into use. In 1968, the building was declared a national monument.

Since recently, the tower can be climbed. From the tower you have a beautiful view. You can do this on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 9.00 to 17.00. Tickets can be purchased via www.kerktorenbeklimmen.nl.
