From monastery church to collegiate church to contemporary parish church and museum. The Gothic Abbey Church still dominates the romantic, white town of Thorn. A gracious legacy of 800 years of female rule; here, women reigned in the highest noble standing.
History of the Abbey Church
Thorn was a source of prosperity for the entire region until the invasion of the French in 1794. But fortunately, the centuries-old charm can still be admired. The Abbey Church is a Gothic cross-basilica with a Romanesque westwork, dating back to the 10th century. The interior is Baroque with an imposing high altar. A Gothic crypt is located under the choir. The church was repeatedly renovated internally between the 15th and 18th centuries, resulting in features of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicism. The neo-Gothic architect P.J.H. Cuypers restored the south side of the church in the 19th century and placed the massive bell tower.
