War memorials

In the heart of Gennep, the Ellen Hoffmannplein is named after one of the murdered Jewish residents, as a symbol for all victims of war and violence. A peace dove and memorial plaque in the center of the square express the desire of the Gennep community for peace and safety. The adjacent library features the 'Kenniskeuken' exhibition about Gennep and the war.

Ellen Hoffmannplein

Ellen Hoffmann was a Jewish resident of Gennep who was killed during the Second World War. After her marriage to cattle trader Arthur van Leeuwen, she ended up in Gennep. Out of fear of deportation, she went into hiding with her sister in Berlin, but fell into the hands of the Gestapo. After surviving various camps, she was ultimately presumed to have been shot during a death march. Her husband and daughter survived the war.
