War memorials

Jac Maris, grandson of painter Jacob Maris, designed the war monument "The Merciful Samaritan" in 1953 at the initiative of former resistance fighters from Gennep. The original was made of tuff stone from the Eiffel region, but in 1993 it was replaced with a bronze replica due to weather influences.

The Merciful Samaritan

The war monument "The Merciful Samaritan" in Gennep was created in 1953 by Jac Maris, at the initiative of former resistance fighters. Maris wanted to honor the fallen heroes of the war with his monument and therefore chose the Merciful Samaritan as an example of willingness to sacrifice and neighborly love. The names of the fifty-four war victims from Gennep are listed on the pedestal of the monument, along with an appropriate text by Anton van Duinkerken. "The life they gave for freedom forbids us to live as fearful slaves." Jac Maris has created several well-known war monuments, including the Airborne monument in Oosterbeek.
