Monument Evacuation Lomm

During World War II, the inhabitants of Velden, Limburg, were forced to evacuate by the German occupiers. On January 13, 1945, the residents were given an ultimatum that they had to leave for Germany the next day, where they would be taken by train to the north of the country. Most residents were removed from their homes and shelters by the Grüne Polizei and had to walk to Germany. During the journey, they were chased and robbed by German troops and became exhausted. Multiple casualties occurred during the evacuation, with some attempting to flee and being shot by the German occupiers. The area around Velden and Roermond had been heavily and bloodily contested between the Allies and the occupiers in the months leading up to the evacuation. The evacuation was intended to make the area more defensible and was referred to as "the battle of the Roer triangle."
