War memorials

On the Vrijheidsplein in Gennep, the mosaics are based on images by amateur filmmaker Jan Jetten. These rare images show Jewish citizens leaving their homes and heading to the train station in 1942. The mosaics are a tribute to the Jewish community of Gennep and a reminder of the horrors of World War II.

'And then they were gone...'

In 2018, Harrie-Jan Metselaars wrote the book 'And then they were gone' about the persecution of Jews in Gennep. Since then, 22 stumbling stones, concrete cobblestones with brass plates containing personal information, can be found in the center. These small monuments for the victims of National Socialism, including Jews, Sinti, Roma, political prisoners, and others, can be found throughout Europe. They are embedded in the pavement near the victim's original home. These small stones are called Stolpersteine.
