Places of interest

On the south side of the village of Baarlo lies Kasteel d'Erp. Originally, this castle was also called Huys Baarlo or De Borcht. The name d'Erp is derived from the last noble family that lived in the castle. The first mention dates back to 1388, when it was sold to Jacob van Montfort.

In 1543, Charles V visited the castle and in 1572 it was sacked by the Beggars. Sybert III of Eyll rebuilt the castle in 1590. After this, the Bierens and Van Erp families were the main residents.

The Van Erp family left the castle in 1914. The municipality bought the dilapidated castle in 1961 and restored it in 1974. After this, it was used for a while as the official residence of the mayor of Maasbree. Since 1993, the castle has been privately owned and not open to visitors
