War memorials

War memorials have important symbolic value and contribute to awareness of the history and the impact of war on society. Besides monuments commemorating soldiers and victims of the liberation, there are also monuments commemorating the Jewish community and remembering the horrors of the Holocaust. Visiting and commemorating these war memorials keeps alive the memory of the events and victims of World War II.

National Indies Monument

The National Indies Monument in Roermond is a memorial in memory of the Dutch servicemen and civilians who died in the former Dutch East Indies and Dutch New Guinea during the Second World War and its aftermath. It also commemorates the Indonesian civilian victims of the battle. This additional monument was unveiled on 25 August 1990. Two sides of the triangular memorial stone depict Java and the Netherlands. Every year in September, a major commemoration takes place at the National Indies Monument with numerous veterans and dignitaries in attendance.
