Before the village was founded in 1955, Vredepeel was a rugged peel area. A Vredepeel pole has been placed on the border between the municipalities of Venray, St. Anthonis and Gemert-Bakel.
There are many nature reserves around Vredepeel. Nowadays, the defence airbase is also located here.
