Walking/hiking routes

The Premium Hiking Trail Molenplas starts at the impressive Hompesche Mill and leads over an island in the river Meuse, surrounded by two river branches. You walk past ancient trees, glacial boulders, open fields, and bird-filled ponds. Along the way, you may see grazing Galloway cattle and Konik horses. This varied trail is short but full of surprises.

Walking through water and nature

The trail follows a firm gravel path and first passes a unique group of two-thousand-year-old trees uncovered during gravel extraction. Further on, you walk toward the village of Ohé, where the fairytale-like Hasselholt Castle is hidden behind dense riverbank vegetation. The trail continues along the Juliana Canal to a crossing made of glacial stones between two lakes. In high water conditions, there is an alternative route.

Plants, animals, and views

Along the way, you may spot cormorants, common terns, or even a beaver. In spring and summer, special plants such as red bartsia and agrimony are in bloom. At the bird observation post, you'll have a panoramic view over the lake. Free-roaming Galloways and Konik horses help maintain the open landscape. Please keep your distance and do not feed the animals.

Cultural history and surroundings

The Hompesche Mill, built in 1722, has eight floors and includes a small exhibition about the area. Nearby lies the fortified town of Stevensweert, with cobbled streets, old cannons, and listed buildings. The entire nature reserve around Molenplas is managed by Natuurmonumenten.

Things to know before your hike

The trail is mostly flat and covered with semi-paved paths. After rain, some parts may be muddy. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Due to path reconstruction, the official premium label has been temporarily suspended, but the route is fully accessible.
