The fortifications were built by the Spaniards in 1633. From the centre of the fortress a clear and characteristic street pattern was designed to better defend the fortress. All streets run like 'spokes in a wheel' to the centre. This street pattern is still clearly visible.
The tour starts with a short film about the history of Stevensweert. Afterwards the guide will lead you through the historic centre, past beautiful monumental buildings and an original fortress cannon, to the reconstruction of the fortifications.
