Cross-border nature reserve

On the border of Belgian and Dutch Limburg and North Brabant lies the GrensPark Kempen~Broek. A 25,000-hectare cross-border nature reserve that is unique in its size for Flanders and the Netherlands. It spans in the Netherlands over the Cranendonck, Nederweert and Weert and in Belgium over Bocholt, Bree, Kinrooi and Maaseik. GrensPark Kempen~Broek was once a hideout for billygoat riders and smugglers but today it is an oasis of peace and natural beauty. A varied landscape consisting of several adjoining parts, each with its own atmosphere: forest, marsh, hayfield, stream valley. These different landscapes are home to many rare plants and animals.

Mills in Kempen~Broek

The municipality of Weert is known for its green surroundings and the many water and wind turbines that can be found there. Also in GrensPark Kempen~Broek. There are several mills in the nature reserve that are well worth a visit. On certain days, the mills are open to the public and the miller will explain everything about the operation and history of these beautiful mills. Nature and Environment Centre De IJzeren Man

One of the gateways to GrensPark Kempen~Broek is the Nature and Environment Centre De IJzeren Man. In this interactive visitor centre, you will learn everything about the nature of Kempen~Broek. The Nature and Environment Centre organises all kinds of activities for young and old about nature, the environment and sustainability. There is an aquarium with fish found in the Tungelroyse Beek and a large garden containing a herb garden, an insect garden and a tiny forest.
