A train with a story
The name Miljoenenlijn dates back to the 1920s. During the construction of the railway between Schaesberg (now Landgraaf) and Simpelveld, a lot of earth had to be moved due to the hilly landscape. This made construction expensive: one million guilders per kilometre, a huge amount at the time. That’s how the nickname “Miljoenenlijn” (Millionline) came to be.
Today, authentic steam trains and railbuses still run along this route. You travel on parts of the old railway lines Aachen – Maastricht and Schaesberg – Simpelveld.
What to expect
A ride with the Miljoenenlijn feels like stepping back in time. The smell of coal, the whistle of the locomotive and the clatter of the carriages take you into the past. Choose a seat on classic wooden benches or enjoy the red velvet of first class.
Along the way, you’ll see beautiful views of the South Limburg countryside. You’ll pass rolling hills, old stations and charming villages. On some days there are special events, such as steam train weekends or live music rides.
Depart from Simpelveld Station
Simpelveld Station is the heart of the Miljoenenlijn. You can board here, visit the workshop or explore the platform museum. The station restaurant serves coffee and traditional Limburg vlaai.
