City walk: Ommetje Blitterswijck

Length: 1.7 km. The theme route "Ommetje Blitterswijck" has been shortened as a result of lengthy work on the project "Mooder Maas". The entire route via nodes 1, 2, 3, 4 and back via 3, 7, 1 is now: 1.7 km.

Walking in the characteristic Maasdorp Blitterswijck, will take you through the centre of the village of Blitterswijck and past locations that refer to the rich history of the village. In the outskirts of Blitterswijck you will find beautiful nature, with the forelands of the Meuse and wooded sand dunes.

The walking route follows the junction network. Between Junctions 2 and 3, you will pass the Blotevoetenpad. This is great fun for children, because you can literally walk on bare feet and there is a special section here for walking through the stream!

The first mention of the Blitterswijck manor was around 1229. Some time later, around 1400, the castle of Blitterswijck was built.

This castle occupies an important place in the history of Blitterswijck. In the course of the centuries, various noble families have lived here. Since 1903, the castle has served as a monastery. The convent walls were built by order of the French Slotzusters at the beginning of the last century. At the end of the Second World War, the castle was completely destroyed. The outlying area of Blitterswijck is characterised by the forelands of the Maas and wooded shifting dunes.
